Receiving invitations to a banquet or a ball is an exciting event for all nobles, where occasions like this is a fighting ground for them to get spouses from well-known families, show off their luxuries life and get the latest gossips. However, it was another story for Charles Lansdowne, the eldest son of the Marquis George Lansdowne. He wasn’t pleased about receiving an invitation letter for a ball party, where his hesitation to accept the invitation was due for receiving it a week before the ball, which was clearly to him that it was initially sent late; for the etiquette is to send any invitation at least 6 weeks before the event.

Moreover, it was hard for Charles to attained any event after the embarrassing incident his brother, Carl, made at the last party.

The invitation made Charles suspicious and nervous, out of irritation he threw the letter, but his aimless toss made the thin paper fell towards his stationary set and knocking the quill pen leading it to splash ink all over his new pair of leather gloves, he panicked and tried to clean them, but his grip wasn’t firm enough leading them to fell over his clothes, “tsk” he clicked his tongue.

After changing his clothes and returning to his office, he was surprised to find the butler inside his office waiting for him. It was unusual for Charles to find anyone inside his office alone and unannounced, moreover the butler looked nervous with his hands tucked inside his pockets.

The moment their eyes met, the butler fixed his posture and cleared his throat “Master Charles, your father insists for you to attend the party, its to regain the family reputation, and it’s the duty for the eldest son of the Lansdowne family”.

Charles rolled his eyes “But, it’s insulting-“

The butler cut off Charles and said in a firm voice “No buts Master Charles! Beside, Lord George decided to end Master Carl’s detention, therefor, both of you will attend the ball”.

Charles stopped protesting and his mouth formed a straight line showing his disbelieve.

احتار شارلز وهو يجمع أفكاره محاولاً وضع النقاط على الحروف مخمناً سبب حصوله على هذه الدعوة بمثل هذا الوقت، كما أن مسبب المشاكل -أخاه الأصغر كارل- قد أحرجهم في الحفلة السابقة، وكان تصرفه كافٍ لتنقطع عنهم رسائل الدعوات لفترة طويلة.

شعر شارلز بالصداع لتفكيرة المطول بهذا الموضوع ورمى الرسالة بكل انزعاج والتي بدورها ارتطمة بريشة الكتابة لتقع على الطاولة وتحدث الفوضى برش الحبر على قفازاته الجديدة المصنوعة من الجلد، وعلى عجل، حاول شارلز تنظيف القفازات، لتفرط من قبظته وتلطخ ملابسة، "تسك" طرق شارلز بلسانه شاعراً بالانزعاج أكثر. أحس شارلز بأن أنزعاجه سيسبب له ارتكاب حماقات أخرى، فقرر الخروج من مكتبه ليغير ملابسه وليشغل باله بأمور آخرى.

عندما عاد شارلز لمكتبه مجدداً تفاجئ بوجد كبير الخدم واقفاً ينتظره، رفع شارلز حاجبه متعجباً لتصرف كبير الخدم، فهو يعرف أن شارلز لا يحب أن يدخل مكتبه أي أحد في غيابه، كما أن تعابير وجه كبير الخدم كانت تدل على قلقه وهو يدس يده في جيبه.

عندما التقت عينا شارلز بعينا كبير الخدم، استقام كبير الخدم وتنحنح "سيدي، والدك يلح عليك لحضور الحفل مهما كان الأمر مريباً وتغطية العار الذي سببه السيد كارل في الحفلة الماضية، فأنها من واجباتك كالأبن الأكبر لعائلة لانسدون أن ترفع من شأن العائلة وتحسين صورتها في المجتمع".

أدار شارلز بعيناه للأعلى، لم يكن يرغب بالحديث عن هذا الموضوع مجدداً "ولكن-"

قاطع كبير الخدم احتجاج شارلز بكل حزم "وللعلم، السيد جورج قد انهى عقوبة حجز السيد كارل، ويأمركما لحضور الحفل سوياً".
